Fearless Wellness

Where the Wild Things Went

Most of us have read Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are.” If you haven’t, it chronicles a boy named Max who wears a wolf suit and ends up getting sent to bed without supper for being a mischievous ‘Wild Thing’ and talking back to his mother.

But in his room, Max’s world is transformed by his imagination, and he ends up sailing away, “back over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day,” to a magical land filled with other, much more enormous and terrifying, Wild Things.

However, Max isn’t afraid. He ends up becoming King of the Wild Things and lets his Wild side run free with them. But eventually, he punishes the Wild Things for being mischievous and longs to be home with the people who love him the most.

So, he forgoes his position as King and sails home. As he does, the Wild Things chase after him, stating that they love him so much that they’ll eat him.

But Max stands his ground, despite them ‘roaring their terrible roars and gnashing their terrible teeth.’ He journeys back home, where he finds his warm dinner waiting for him. He is still wearing his wolf costume, though now with the hood off.

And My Private Practice Was Born

Something Wild Wellness was inspired by life with my own ‘Wild Things’ and my experience of working with thousands of people over the years who, weathered by life, had forgotten that they also have a Wild Thing within them who isn’t limited by fear.

Every single one of us starts out the same: Brilliant, with vast Wild potential. But then people and circumstances narrow our view of ourselves and our capabilities. And the world gets smaller.

You Learned That Life Can Be Scary and That You’re Ill-Equipped to Handle It.

The truth is, you are still Brilliant, with vast potential. You just learned not to see it anymore, and that you can’t handle what life throws your way.

In you is someone who can stare fear in the eyes and tame it so that it no longer limits you. That someone can have healthy and loving relationships with people who have boundaries and don’t try to consume you.

Life, at its most well, is about balance.

And just as you learned to be fearful, you can learn to honor that Wild Thing within you and reach your fullest potential to become fearlessly well.
